One study reports that a positive response to the question �''On any single occasion during the past 3 months, have you had more than 5 drinks containing alcohol?�'' accurately identifies individuals who meet the criteria for at-risk drinking or the criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence.
An individual who reaches for alcohol every day as a way to relax or as a way to self medicate or to relieve stress is at risk for developing an alcohol addiction; an example of this is the individual who has a drink every time they have an argument with their spouse or boss.

The type of treatment one receives for their alcohol dependence problems depends on the severity of their alcohol problem and the resources that are available in their community.
