Why Is Underage Drinking Dangerous? Underage drinking is a major cause of death from injuries among young people. Each year, approximately 5,000 people under age 21 die as a result of underage drinking; this includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, and hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drownings.
College aged students that were heavy drinkers reported a much higher likelihood of recognizing the symptoms of alcohol poisoning in another student and providing the necessary assistance; students who are not familiar with the effects of alcohol may not recognize that help is needed.
Since the mid-1970�''s, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the 21-year-old minimum drinking age laws have saved 21,887 lives.
