Emergency room doctors are now being trained on screening patients that are coming in for alcohol abuse problems; this creates an opportunity for these physicians to be actively involved in helping to reduce the growing rate of alcoholism within the community.
A recent study by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) has indicated that over 32% of high school seniors reported not being aware that alcohol can produce death via overdose.
Alcohol is made as plant sugars in fruits come into contact with a fungus called yeast and they begin to ferment; as they rot, they will excrete a toxic substance called ethanol or ethyl alcohol--or simply alcohol. In the fermentation process, the yeast continues to feed on the plant sugars, thus the alcohol concentration levels rise; once these levels get closer to 14 percent, the yeast dies, quite literally, of alcohol poisoning.
