  • What Is Binge Drinking? Binge alcohol use is defined as drinking five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the past 30 days (from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health [NSDUH]). Heavy drinking is defined as binge drinking on at least 5 days in the past month.
  • In educating physicians and other health professionals throughout this country, the subject of alcoholism is rarely addressed; the fact that these clinicians will be afforded many opportunities to affect their patient's alcohol habits when they begin practicing medicine is ironic.
  • According to the Worldwide Health Organization (WHO), alcohol use is taking an increased toll on lives and communities; young people throughout the world are currently reported to be adopting a series of more harmful and risky drinking patterns.
  • In 1984, the Federal Government enacted the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which calls for reduced Federal transportation funds-the money States use to build and repair their highways-to those States that did not raise the minimum legal drinking age to 21. Today, drinking by anyone under age 21 is against the law in every State and in the District of Columbia.
