  • One of the first signs of alcoholism is alcohol tolerance (e.g. the ability to drink more alcohol without experiencing its effects).
  • Many people wonder why some individuals can use alcohol without problems but others cannot. One important reason has to do with genetics. Scientists have found that having an alcoholic family member makes it more likely that if you choose to drink you too may develop alcoholism. Genes, however, are not the whole story.
  • A 150-pound man would have to drink approximately 18 beverage units (one unit consists of 5 oz. of wine or one and a half ounces of spirits) in about a hour in order to reach the lethal blood alcohol concentration which is approximately 0.4%.
